How to Change Your Car’s Headlights

When your vehicle's headlights go out, fixing them as quickly as possible is essential. This will keep you and your passengers safe and avoid traffic violations on the road. If you want to change your exterior lights, referring to your vehicle's owner's manual and manufacturer guidelines is key. If you don't have the physical manual for your car, here's a good place to start. Once you've found your vehicle's owner's manual, you can gather the needed equipment and replacement lights to finish the job.

What You'll Need Before Starting

Before starting the DIY project, make sure you have everything from the list below:

  • New Headlights - Refer to the manufacturer's manual before purchasing new lights to ensure you get the correct lights.

  • Gloves to deter oils from your hands from damaging the new bulb

  • Socket wrench or Screwdriver (depending on your vehicle)

Step 1 - Find the Headlight Holder

Open the hood of your car and find where the headlights are housed. This is usually the front of the vehicle close to the engine.

Step 2 - Remove Power Connected Wires

You will see power wires from the headlight holder that supply electricity to the bulb. Depending on your vehicle, these are usually located close to the bulb's base and can be removed by unclipping or unscrewing.

Step 3 - Remove the Existing Headlight Bulb

Once you've removed the power cords from the existing bulb, you can remove the old headlight from the headlight holder. Depending on your vehicle's make, you may have to unclip, rotate, or unscrew a plastic catch to release the light.

Step 4 - Install New Light Bulb

Wearing the gloves you prepared before starting, carefully insert the new headlight into the original bulb's place. It is important not to touch the bulb's glass at this step. Once the bulb is in the correct position, re-lock the mechanism holding the original bulb.

Step 5 - Reconnect to Power Source

Once the new bulb has been installed, you can reconnect the wires removed in Step 2. Make sure this connection is securely connected.

Step 6 - Test the New Lights

Lastly, turn your vehicle on and test to ensure your new lights work correctly.
