Contacting your Insurance Provider

As soon as you're safe, there are a couple of things to do immediately following an accident. If applicable, you will want to get the other party's insurance and contact info. From there, you'll want to contact your insurance provider as soon as you can. Once you've reached a safe location, give them a call and have the following information on hand:

  • Make and model of the covered vehicle
  • Your name
  • Name of the driver
  • Location and time the accident happened
  • Any information you have on other parties involved, including their name and insurance provider
  • Names and contact info of witnesses
  • Detailed description of what happened.
  • Police report number, if applicable

Your insurance provider will generate a claim number on the spot you want to remember. If you opted to file a police report, you'll want to provide it. If you did not call the police, they'll continue without it. If you called the police and did not get a report number, you can contact the police station to get it or to have them file a report.

Working with the Insurance Adjuster

After you have filed a claim with your insurance provider, you'll be contacted by an insurance adjuster. They'll want to review some details from your claim and may have you contact the other party's insurance provider for an estimate. Often, the adjuster will want to perform an inspection and build their own estimate. They'll work on a report on the incident that you'll want a copy of after they create it. The adjuster usually takes a couple of days to complete their full report.

Payment & Repair Process

After you speak to the adjuster for the first time, you should schedule an estimate with a trusted collision repair center. The collision center will provide an estimate to you and your insurance provider, informing the provider's ultimate approved claim. The insurance provider may direct you to a specific body shop for your estimate and to have the repair work done, but you aren't obligated to follow their recommendations. You can choose your own shop for the repairs. Assuming the insurance provider approves the repairs, the collision center can move forward with your repairs. Once all work is finished, the insurance will pay the collision center directly, and you'll pay any deductible due upon pickup.
