Automatic vs. Manual Transmission - What You Should Know Before Buying

What is a Car Transmission?

In the simplest terms, the car transmission is the gearbox that helps control the car's speed and torque. It controls the engine's speed and ensures each wheel receives the proper power. Both manual and automatic transmissions work similarly by shifting the engine into the correct gear based on speed and needed power. 

Manual Transmission

Vehicles with a manual transmission require the driver to operate the clutch and shift gears when necessary. This is commonly called a stick shift and gives the drivers complete control over their vehicle. Vehicles with manual transmissions often cost less due to the cheaper installation of a manual transmission compared to an automatic. 

Cons of a Manual Transmission

Although manual transmission vehicles may be cheaper and allow drivers complete control over their cars, here are some cons to consider before making any purchases:

• More attention is required. Although driving a manual transmission vehicle can be more fun and give the driver more control, drivers must always be aware of their speed and gear.

• Fewer options. If you're searching for your next car, you may have difficulty finding the vehicle you want in a manual transmission.

Automatic Transmission

An automatic transmission selects the correct gear for the driver based on vehicle speed and driving conditions. There are two types of automatic transmissions: traditional and dual-clutch. The traditional transmission is attached to the engine with a torque converter, while the dual-clutch transmission uses a duo of clutches to engage the gears. Automatic transmission vehicles are easier to drive, allowing drivers to focus more on the road than manual transmission drivers. Manual drivers will also have a much easier time going up hills or steep surfaces.

Cons of an Automatic Transmission

Manual transmission vehicles are more common on the road today but still come with some downfalls when compared to automatic transmission vehicles, including:

• More expensive. Since manual transmission vehicles require more parts and installation time, they are typically more expensive than a manual transmission version.  

• Less fuel efficiency. Automatic vehicles are less fuel-efficient than manual transmission vehicles.

CVT Transmission (Continuous Variable Transmission)

In recent years, innovations in transmissions have led to continuous variable transmission or CVT. This transmission uses one variable gear for all driving conditions a driver may face. CVT transmissions allow for better fuel economy, a smoother ride, and a more efficient engine speed. It works similarly to the automatic transmission, allowing drivers to keep both hands on the wheel and focus on the road.
