My Car Broke Down - Now What?

Experiencing a sudden vehicle breakdown can be stressful and possibly dangerous. Having the proper knowledge to handle a vehicle breakdown can add safety to you and other drivers on the road. At Bob Moore Collision Center, we want to equip you with this knowledge to handle these situations confidently.

1. Remain Calm

The first thing to remember in these situations is to remain calm. Panicking can lead to poor decision-making and clouded judgment, so gathering yourself before assessing your vehicle is best.

2. Pull Over to a Safe Area

Turn on your hazard lights and pull your vehicle to a safe area. This area could be a parking lot, emergency lane, or shoulder lane. If you can't reach a safe location, remain buckled in your seat and call for help.

3. Assess Your Vehicle

Now that you're in a safe area check for any smoke or flames. If you notice either, evacuate the car immediately. Listen for any unusual noises or sounds that could cause your breakdown.

4. Alert Other Drivers

For added safety, while your vehicle is broken down, raise your hood or use reflective triangles to alert other drivers that your car is broken down.

5. Call for Help

If you have roadside assistance, contact our provider as soon as possible. If not, contact a trusted mechanic or towing service. If you notice any potential risk during the situation, contact local authorities.

6. Stay Inside Your Vehicle

Now that you've contacted help, remain in your vehicle with the doors shut and locked if you are in unsafe or unfamiliar areas.

7. Visit Bob Moore Collision Center
