Car Maintenance Checklist

All car maintenance starts with oil changes. They're the most important thing you can do to ensure you get the most out of your vehicle, and all your maintenance checklists are usually built around oil changes. The rate at which your vehicle needs an oil change will vary significantly depending on the type of car you drive and its age. Older vehicles need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, while newer models need one every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. We'd recommend consulting with a mechanic to determine how often you should get an oil change. When you do an oil change with Bob Moore, we usually follow a variation of the checklist below:

Of course, the oil change is the star of the show, but when you bring your car in, it gives us a chance to perform an inspection. We use this inspection to replace windshield wipers, top up fluids, check your lights, and ensure nothing catches you off guard. As your vehicle puts more miles on the odometer, our maintenance checklists get a little more advanced.

Car Maintenance Schedule

As mentioned above, maintenance schedules are built around oil changes. If we assume you bring your vehicle in for an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, you'll usually find your larger maintenance items happen every 30,000 miles. This is a rough estimate, so be sure to check your specific make and model for a better understanding of when your vehicle needs proper maintenance. 

At 30,000 miles, you usually want to replace your cabin air filter, which is usually clogged by then, making it harder for your engine to breathe. It's also a good opportunity to replace your fuel filter. If it gets clogged, you're in danger of your vehicle seizing up. 

At 60,000 miles, there's a lot more work to do. By this point, you're likely looking at a new battery, fresh coolant, and a range of other consumables. 60,000 miles is a good time to check your brakes, replace your brake pads, and change your brake fluid so they last another 50,000 to 60,000 miles. At 60,000 miles, it may also be worth replacing your transmission fluid. 

At 90,000 miles, it's time to inspect your hoses for leaks. From A/C to power steering, ensuring your hoses are in good shape helps give you peace of mind while you drive. 90,000 is also a good time to replace major consumables, such as your timing belt, spark plugs, and more.

Every car is different, so we recommend consulting your mechanic before adhering to any plan you find online. While it's important to get these bigger ticket items dealt with, you don't have to do it all at once! 

Tire Service

We've covered most of the mechanical maintenance schedules to keep your vehicle in great shape, but the other half of the equation is tires. As your first point of contact with the road, your tires are the most important consumable in your vehicle, helping keep you safe in all conditions. To maximize your tires' lifespan, it's important to get them rotated regularly. Usually, we'd recommend pairing this with your oil changes, helping reduce the time you spend in the shop. Frequent rotations help keep your tire tread even, keeping you safe and helping your tires last. You should aim to get your tires replaced every five to six years, or every 50,000 miles.
