What is a Deductible?

Shopping for car insurance? There are two terms you should be familiar with: deductibles and premiums. The deductible is the amount of money you have to pay out of pocket for damages before your insurance kicks in. Your premium is the amount of money you pay your insurance provider every pay period, and it's directly related to your deductible. The higher your premium, the lower your deductible will be, and the opposite is also true. This coverage helps ensure an accident doesn't set your finances too far back after an accident, but with different levels of car insurance, you'll want to find the right mix of premiums and deductible balance for your vehicle.

Types of Car Insurance

Generally speaking, there are six types of car insurance:

  • Liability Coverage: Required in most states, including Oklahoma. It covers injuries and damage you cause to others in an accident.
  • Collision Coverage: This coverage covers damage to your vehicle regardless of fault, caused by collisions with trees, other cars, and more.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This plan covers all non-collision damage to your car, including fire, hail, theft, vandalism, and more. This also covers car hail damage and car tornado damage.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: If the other driver in an accident doesn't have sufficient coverage, this covers the gap.
  • Personal Injury Protection: Covers medical expenses, lost wages, and other costs in no-fault states.
  • Medical Payment Coverage: A more limited version of PIP, covering medical expenses for your car, regardless of fault.

Risks of Not Having Car Insurance

You don't have to think too hard about the risks associated with shirking car insurance. For starters, it's against the law to drive in Oklahoma without it. Oklahoma requires minimum liability insurance of $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for total bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. If you don't have this basic level of coverage, it's illegal to drive your car. For many drivers, it makes sense to go a step beyond this basic level of coverage, as these days, if you total someone else's car, it's likely to cost you more than $25,000. Liability insurance is the most common choice, with collision coverage close behind, ensuring your car, others' cars, and everyone's medical expenses are covered.
