Find Out About Land Rover

A premier British bran, Land Rover is well known for rugged and durable vehicles that can take on any terrain. While Land Rover is part of Jaguar and Tata Motors of India, the name was first created in 1948. Though the company has been predominantly known as off-roading vehicles, today's models are more upscale and designed for the luxury market.

The brand has evolved from its early days where the body-on-frame design gave it a distinct appearance and four-wheel drive was not only standard but the only option. Today, the unified body and frame and two-wheel drive models have helped to provide a new image.

The Beginnings of Land Rover

The Rover Company was the manufacturer of the Land Rover with the original design developed by the chief designer for the company. There is some speculation that the design was inspired by the Jeep brand. Early models featured a ladder-frame chassis in various shades of green.

Land Rover was first a product line before it became a company of its own in 1978. British Leyland Motor Corporation took over Rover Company in 1967 but fell into trouble after this. A separate company for Land Rover was formed, which was kept under the umbrella of BL. BMW would acquire Land Rover and the rest of Rover Group in 1994, but it was later sold to Ford Motor Company in 2000. The change to BMW occurred just before the second generation of Range Rover was launched.

Ford was responsible for much of the change in the boxed frame design and for introducing the integrated body frame. Only the Defender carried on the original design. It was in 2007 that Ford decided to sell Land Rover and Jaguar to Tata Motors.

Land Rover Today

The Land Rover brand makes several models today. The popular Range Rover comes in four models, including Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. There are also two Discovery models, Discovery and Discovery Sport. Defender is the other model available.

Even though the look and image has changed for Land Rover, you'll still be impressed with the capability of these models. They are designed to take you where you want to go, even if that means going off-road. Of course, you can expect to get a little muddy if you like to play in the dirt. However, you'll want to ensure your Land Rover stays looking nice for your urban adventures.
